[Abstract]
Building and Sustaining Successful Career Services
and Experiential Learning Programs
The University of Central Florida, a public multi-campus research institution of over 50,000 students, has been recognized for the quality, innovation, size, and diversity of its collaborative efforts to prepare students for success in their future careers. University of Central Florida students are well-prepared and "work-ready" at the time of graduation as a result of strategic investments in programs, staffi ng and facilities dedicated to career services and experiential learning.
The comprehensive program begins with early interventions to develop career management skills in students. It continues with the identifi cation of relevant professional experiences through service learning, externships, internships, job shadowing, co-op, volunteerism and other applied learning activities. A strong employer outreach plan that includes staffi ng of employer relations liaisons with academic colleges strengthens the development of strategic partnerships with quality employing organizations.
Key to our success was the commitment made by the President and the Provost in 2004 to invest in the development of a comprehensive and coordinated career services and experiential learning program at the University of Central Florida. The intended outcomes of this strategic effort were for students to realize their career goals, for academic programs to fi nd active partners in experiential learning activities, for employers to better identify top talent for their workforce needs and for the institution to be more distinctive and invaluable to the global community.
This presentation will describe the successes and challenges experienced at the University of Central Florida in creating and sustaining a dynamic and effective career services and experiential learning program for both undergraduate and graduate students. Lessons learned in developing important relationships with faculty, student development professionals, employers, and community partners will also be discussed. Plans for the construction of a student funded state-of-the art facility to centralize career services and experiential learning activities in one place and scheduled to break ground this fall will also be highlighted.
