Dr. Rita Rice Morris
President, Shawnee State University, Portsmouth, Ohio
The fi fth president of Shawnee State University, Dr. Morris brings vision and leadership to SSU, the tri-state,and the Appalachian region of Ohio. She has over 40 years of experience in higher education, serving as professor, dean, and provost/vice president for academic affairs at institutions like Shawnee State University. A native of California, Dr. Morris holds a Ph.D. in communication from the State University of New York at Buffalo (1978), an M.A. in speech communication education from Northern Illinois University (1970), and a B.A. in speech communication from California State University at Long Beach (1968). She also studied university management development at Harvard University and Carnegie Mellon University.
Dr. Morris serves on the Board of the Ohio Appalachian Center for Higher Education (OACHE), the Oak Hill Community Development Corporation, the Southern Ohio Medical Center Board of Directors, the Shawnee State University Foundation, OSU South Center Endeavor Center, and the Information Technology Alliance of Appalachian Ohio (ITAAO). In addition, she serves on the Association of American State Colleges and Universities' (AASCU) professional development committee, Council of State Representatives, and Board of Directors; the American Council on Education's Commission on Leadership and Institutional Effectiveness,
the America Mideast Conference of Presidents, Educate the Tri-State, the Southern Ohio Consortium for Higher Education, the Inter-University Council of Presidents, and The Partnership for Continued Learning and the Ohio College Association.

[Abstract]

Long a supporter of the role of higher education in the development of the well-being of the State and the lives of its citizens, the State of Ohio has renewed commitment to higher education with increased funding and programming and developed a partnership between a new system of higher education and its economic development activities to insure that there is a well prepared workforce available to support economic growth and expansion. Statewide initiatives are aimed at increasing the number of citizens achieving post-secondary education, linking the educated workforce to the creation of new businesses, attracting and maintaining talented researchers and entrepreneurs, and using institutions of higher education as instruments of economic development.
Building upon its tradition as a public regional university and its role as a "steward of place" Shawnee State has begun to respond to this new partnership by enhancing career based programming for its students to prepare them for success in the workforce, strengthening the links between the university's curriculum and the needs of regional business and industry, and building new relationships within the community that will foster economic growth. Specific strategies will be presented with an assessment of their impact and/or potential.
